Alaves vs Barcelona Preview

The early game on the final day in LaLiga 2019/20 comes from Vitoria where two sides with nothing left to play for clash. Barcelona’s title hopes ended on Thursday night while Alaves secured their safety with victory at Betis. They will see this as something of a free shot to try and claim the scalp of a Barça side that will now firmly be looking ahead to the Champions League.

The hosts had been in dire form with just 1 point from 7 games piling the pressure on them as they travelled to Seville in the week. It was a run of form that saw Asier Garitano sacked and Juan Muñiz appointed on a short-term deal. He made a big call by leaving out Lucas Perez at the Benito Villamarin and instead going with Oliver Burke as Joselu’s strike partner and it proved an inspired move as the duo combined to break the deadlock and set Alaves on their way to a victory which ensured they will be in LaLiga again next term regardless of the result here.

As for Barcelona, their season sank to a new depth on Thursday night as they lost their first home game of the campaign against 10-man Osasuna – a team that effectively had nothing to play for. The damage had already been done in truth as far as the title race was concerned and Real Madrid’s victory rendered the result meaningless in terms of the final positions.

However that loss could yet have some pretty significant consequences. It brings Quique Setien’s future into doubt and even the man himself stated that he was unsure whether or not he would take charge of the club’s Champions League game against Napoli next month, although conversations with the board this week suggest that is now more likely. A downbeat Lionel Messi didn’t exactly leap to his coach’s defence with some cutting post-match remarks and it’s safe to say that it won’t exactly be a happy Barcelona camp that heads to the Basque Country on Sunday.

We will have LaLiga predictions and previews for every game on the final matchday plus six LaLiga SmartBank previews for the Monday games which sees the second tier end.

Alaves vs Barcelona Predictions

Score Prediction: 1-1 Draw

It’ll be interesting to see what Setien’s approach is here. He may opt to rest a few of his key players and will definitely be without Gerard Pique through suspension. However he will also be aware that this is his last competitive opportunity to experiment prior to the Napoli game and therefore it’s likely to be more in the way of tinkering rather than total overhaul.

Either way in truth, you no longer have much faith in this Barcelona side when they travel away and an Alaves side that will be buoyed by their win at Betis look capable of getting a result.
