Real Sociedad vs Sevilla Preview

Real Sociedad and Sevilla meet in one of the most appealing fixtures on this bumper Thursday of LaLiga action. The visitors have now secured Champions League qualification and are in with a real chance of finishing in 3rd place, which would represent their best finish since 2008/09. La Real meanwhile are battling for Europa League qualification and currently hold a 3 point advantage on Athletic Club in 8th.

Athletic do hold the H2H advantage though so there is pressure on La Real to claim maximum points here, particularly with a tough trip to the Wanda Metropolitano being their final game. They gave their European hopes a huge boost by winning 2-1 at Villarreal earlier in the week but they have lost 3 of their last 4 at Anoeta with the absence of home fans seemingly having a negative impact.

Sevilla meanwhile are continuing to enjoy life on the road. They’ve won 50% of their away games in LaLiga and only Real Madrid have picked up more away points this season. It’s also 4 straight wins now for Julen Lopetegui’s side who sealed Champions League qualification on Monday night, thanks to a favour from Real Sociedad.

There may be some temptation for Sevilla to relax now they’ve achieved their goal but 3rd place will be a big target and would be a great achievement given the ‘big three’ have dominated this league for most of the past decade and not least when you consider the wholesale changes that took place in the summer at the RSP.

The visitors are missing first choice keeper Tomas Vaclik to suspension here. The hosts have Joseba Zaldua available again to start at right-back and are expected to name what has basically been a pretty clear first choice XI this season.

Real Sociedad vs Sevilla Predictions

Score Prediction: 2-1 Real Sociedad

This is a tough one to call. Overall Sevilla have been much the more impressive side since the season resumed but Real Sociedad’s showing at Villarreal was much more like it as far as they are concerned. If they can find a similar level here, they stand a good chance of seeing off a Sevilla side that may struggle to find the same intensity now they have secured their primary objective by clinching a top four finish.
