Zaragoza play host to Real Oviedo on Sunday and in a high stakes game for both clubs. Zaragoza’s bid for automatic promotion has faltered badly in recent weeks and they are running out of chances to get it back on track with Aragonese rivals Huesca having replaced them in 2nd. Oviedo meanwhile have managed to find a few much needed wins but they still have work to do if they want to remain in this league.

There are few teams in Spain that have been more frustrating to support than Real Zaragoza in recent years. They are already 7 seasons into their longest spell away from the top flight in 70 years and just when it looked like they were finally on course to seal a return to LaLiga, the coronavirus struck and they have come back from the break looking a totally inferior team.

Their return of just 7 points from 8 games since the restart is the 4th worst in the Segunda Division. Their rivals haven’t exactly taken full advantage with many slip-ups too from the other promotion chasing teams but Zaragoza are running out of chances to get their automatic promotion push back on track and they simply have to end a run of 4 straight home league defeats here.

A home game against Oviedo in theory offers them a good chance to do just that. The Asturians have lost 58% of their away league games this term and have an awful recent record on this ground. However they come into this match with renewed belief having won 3 of their last 6 matches including vital wins against Las Palmas and Mirandes to lift themselves above the relegation zone but only just.

Score Prediction: 1-0 Zaragoza

This is a really tough one to call. Zaragoza seem to have completely lost the ability to play at La Romareda with 4 defeats out of 4 at their own ground since the restart behind closed doors. That record will have to play on their minds heading into this game but those matches were against three top six sides in addition to Alcorcon who boast an extraordinary away record.

This should be a simpler prospect against a more limited Oviedo side who will have one eye on Wednesday’s home game against already relegated Racing Santander, a fixture that offers them a better chance to make a big leap towards safety. Zaragoza may just edge this.
