Levante vs Athletic Bilbao Preview
There’s a mid-table clash on Sunday in LaLiga as Levante play host to Athletic Club. The visitors are still in with a shot of Europa League qualification but back-to-back defeats heading into this one have really damaged their hopes of securing a return to European football in 2020/21.
As for Levante, they won’t be playing in Europe but nor will they be going down and it has been another solid season of consolidation for the Valencia club. Having beaten both Barcelona and Real Madrid, they may feel as though they’ve let themselves down at times in what on paper were easier matches and that theme has continued since the restart, with their worst performance coming last time out in a 2-0 defeat against lowly Mallorca.
Athletic are 5 points better off but they may need to win all of their remaining fixtures now to stand a realistic chance of sneaking into the Europa League. They looked to be on course for a valuable 3 points against Sevilla in midweek but late goals from Ever Banega and Munir saw the Andalusians completely turn the game on its head and leave with maximum points.
With games against Leganes and Granada following this, Athletic will fancy their chances of ending the season strongly but they are relying on a few favours elsewhere. As for Levante, victory here would give them a shot at securing a top half finish in the top flight for only the 4th time in their history but it’s questionable how great a source of motivation that will be to their players.

Score Prediction: 2-1 Athletic
Levante have had a good season but there will be a natural tendency to ease off now the hard work has been done. Their showing at Mallorca was slightly lethargic with an ‘end of season’ feel and with Athletic still battling for Europa League football, the visitors might just be able to find an extra level of intensity here which could propel them to three points.
