Girona vs Almeria Preview
This is a really big game in the race for promotion to LaLiga. Almeria are still in strong contention for automatic promotion but with Cadiz pulling clear, it now looks like there is only one place up for grabs and three teams in serious contention. Girona could potentially yet get themselves into the mix in the battle for 2nd place but their immediate priority will be trying to make sure they hang onto a play-off slot.
Like many of the teams at the top, their form since the resumption has been mixed. It’s two wins, two defeats and three draws so far in this final chunk of the season for the Catalans. Their biggest problem has been a lack of goals with just 3 scored in those 7 games. Predictably Cristhian Stuani netted two of them. The Uruguayan now has 25 league goals this term but the rest of the Girona squad have only contributed a pitiful 18, not good enough for a team with promotion ambitions.
Almeria are the second tier’s top scorers and while another Uruguayan forward in the shape of Darwin Núñez has been their biggest contributor with 14, they have managed to find a greater number of alternative goal sources. Having sacked Guti at the end of last month, Almeria haven’t really improved though and they head into this game after a damaging 2-1 home defeat against Tenerife.
This is a tough game to call with Girona having only lost twice at home all season in the league while Almeria have tended to travel well with just 3 defeats on the road and none since the restart. It may just come down to which team can handle the pressure best with so much at stake for both clubs.

Girona’s 7 matches since the resumption have produced a grand total of just 6 goals and have included three 0-0 draws. With both sides showing the stresses and strains of an intense battle for promotion, this could be a cagey affair and another goalless stalemate involving Girona cannot be ruled out.
