Eibar vs Leganes Preview

There’s a potentially decisive game at the bottom of LaLiga on Thursday as Eibar and Leganes clash at Butarque. The visitors gave themselves just a slight glimmer of hope with victory last time out and need to win again here to maintain a realistic chance of beating the drop. Eibar meanwhile will feel as though victory will be sufficient to all but mathematically guarantee their top tier status for another year.

Overall, Eibar have responded well to the challenge of being thrust into a relegation battle, one they really haven’t had to face since their first campaign in the top flight in 2014/15 when Elche’s financial problems spared them relegation. However they do head into this match following back-to-back defeats having taken 8 points from their previous 4 games to move clear of the bottom three. There were plenty of encouraging signs for José Luis Mendilibar on Monday night at Sevilla as his side nearly snatched a dramatic late leveller on several occasions in a 1-0 defeat.

Leganes head into this game following their first win since the restart – a 1-0 victory at Espanyol. However they are still faced with something akin to an impossible mission. They are 7 points below their opponents, who occupy 17th place, heading into this match. A win should at least see them take their survival battle into the final week of the season when strange things can and often do happen but anything short of three points here will all but seal Leganes’ fate.

One slight worry for Eibar is that they haven’t collected a point or scored a goal since Fabián Orellana left the club after his contract expired at the end of June. He is top of their rankings for both goals and assists this term and their midfield problems are heightened by the suspension of Sergio Alvarez here.

Leganes will again have to cope without injured top scorer Oscar Rodriguez and will just need to hope and pray that somebody else can come up with a rare goal, as Kevin Rodrigues did at Espanyol at the weekend.

Eibar vs Leganes Predictions

Score Prediction: 0-0 Draw

With both sides missing their biggest goal threats from the season, a tight game looks likely here. A draw perhaps wouldn’t be a disaster for Eibar and while Leganes need to gamble and go for all three points, it’s just very hard to see where their goals are going to come from. They’ve shown no signs of going down without a fight but it’s hard to fancy them to leave Ipurua with the win they need.
