Getafe vs Villarreal Preview

There’s a significant game in the race for European positions as Villarreal visit Getafe this Wednesday in LaLiga. Just one point and one place separates the sides in the current league standings and the victors here will be in a very strong position to go on and secure at the very least Europa League qualification.

Of the two, Getafe have suffered more from the interruption to a season that was going very nicely for them. They’ve won just 1 of their 7 league games since the restart and haven’t scored in either of their matches since recording that solitary win against Real Sociedad. They are 7 points outside the top four as a result of their poor form but they still haven’t been losing many with defeat at Real Madrid, their only loss in their last 6.

As for Villarreal, they had been absolutely flying with 16 points from their first 6 matches back ensuring they really shot up the league table. However they were brought back down to earth with a bit of a bump on Sunday as a rampant Barcelona won 4-1 at the Ceramica. It was one of the best performances of the season from the Catalan giants but Villarreal were perhaps a bit naive in the way they set up and the defeat combined with Sevilla’s victory on Monday night means they now look like outside shots for a top four finish again.

Getafe will have to do without the suspended Jorge Molina here meaning youngster Hugo Duro could be in line for another start in attack with Pepe Bordalas seemingly still preferring to use Angel as an impact sub. Villarreal also have problems up top with Paco Alcacer an injury doubt and his most likely replacement Carlos Bacca also carrying a knock.

Getafe vs Villarreal Predictions

Score Prediction: 1-1 Draw

You sense the Champions League places may be just out of reach for both of these sides now and a point apiece looks the most likely outcome here, a result that would keep both on course for Europa League qualification. 4 of Getafe’s last 6 games have ended up all square and although they are very different in the way they try to play, this feels like an evenly matched contest and it’s tough to pick a winner.
