Espanyol vs Leganes Preview
Espanyol host Leganes on Sunday in what will surely be a Segunda Division fixture next season. These are the bottom two sides in LaLiga and it really does feel like the game is up for both now. Victory for either would earn them a slight stay of execution but both are likely to have their relegations confirmed at some point in the next week.
It has been an absolute disaster of a season for Espanyol. Poor coaching appointments and investment that came too late are partly to blame but there are also a number of players that have not performed to their potential. This feels very much like a top flight squad on paper and having had sufficient time now to gel following extensive January recruitment, 4 straight defeats at this critical point in the season is nowhere near good enough.
It’s easier to have more sympathy with Leganes but it’s still probably too simplistic to solely blame their impending relegation on an awful ruling that allowed Barcelona to sign their striker Martin Braithwaite in January. They didn’t really get going and standards do appear to have slipped across the pitch following a very impressive 2018/19 campaign where they achieved their highest ever top flight finish of 13th.
Leganes have continued to fight but their 3-0 home defeat against Sevilla in midweek was the first major sign that they no longer seriously believe they can beat the drop. A lack of goals has clearly been a major issue but opponents Espanyol have only managed 3 more this season despite boasting significantly more attacking quality in their ranks.

This will be a strange occasion really with even a victory for either side highly unlikely to alter the course of their respective seasons. Overall, you’d have to say Espanyol are the stronger side and they might have too much for a Leganes team that for the first time this season is starting to look like it really has lost the belief that they can stay afloat.
