Villarreal vs Valencia Preview
There’s a derby in the Valencian Community this Sunday as Valencia make the relatively short trip to the Ceramica to take on Villarreal. As has often been the case since the emergence of the Yellow Submarine around the turn of the century, these two clubs are fighting for positions as well as regional pride with Villarreal currently two points better off.
Europa League qualification, preferably in 5th or 6th to avoid the qualifying rounds which will eat into the summer break, will be the target for both coaches. Villarreal are certainly the team that takes greater form into this match having taken 10 points from their 4 games since the restart although they did ultimately have to withstand heavy late pressure from Sevilla to draw 2-2 in their last match, a game they twice led.
As for Valencia, the halt to the season has not helped them turn things around. Pressure is now really mounting on Albert Celades who has never truly convinced Los Che fans that he is the right man to lead the club forward. The latest setback was a 1-0 defeat at Eibar in midweek which leaves them all but out of top four contention and faced with a real battle just to make the Europa League places.
Both sides have some selection problems heading into this game. Manu Trigueros and Alberto Moreno are suspended for Villarreal while Eliaquim Mangala is banned for Valencia after his red card in the Basque Country. That should see youngster Hugo Guillamon return at centre-back and in truth he has looked more assured than some of Valencia’s more experienced options in the position.
Villarreal vs Valencia Predictions
Score Prediction: 2-1 Villarreal
This Valencia side still impresses in flashes and there is clearly talent in the side but they seldom put a really strong 90 minutes together. Villarreal have looked pretty good since the restart and with the momentum certainly with the Yellow Submarine, they could inflict further damage on Los Che here.
