Espanyol vs Real Madrid Preview

The next twist in the title race could come this Sunday evening when Real Madrid travel to the RCDE Stadium. Conspiracy theorists, mostly of a Barça persuasion, have long accused Espanyol of rolling over in this fixture but they are certainly in no position to do anyone any favours here with Abelardo’s side starting to look doomed to relegation.

It has been a disastrous week or so for Espanyol. Defeats in potentially winnable games against Levante and Betis have left them with a mountain to climb in terms of their battle for safety at a time when relegation rivals Celta Vigo and Eibar have hit form. Thursday’s action left them a huge 8 points from safety with only 7 to play and even against such illustrious opponents, a draw wouldn’t really be a result of any great use to the hosts here.

Real Madrid will be coming for maximum points, as they look to extend LaLiga’s only 100% record since the resumption. Zinedine Zidane does have the luxury of the biggest squad in the division and he has used it well so far, with a 2-0 victory over Mallorca in midweek the latest boost to their title hopes and with Barcelona facing some tough fixtures, the next week or so really does offer Los Blancos the chance to take a firm grip on this title race.

They will though be all too aware that their only league defeats this season have come in away games such as this which on paper didn’t offer the sternest of tests. Despite their position at the foot of the table, Espanyol have held both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid at the RCDE Stadium but they have still only won two home league games all season.

Espanyol vs Real Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: 2-1 Real Madrid

Abelardo will demand a reaction from his side and they are boosted by the return from suspensions of Leandro Cabrera and Bernardo, their first choice central defensive pairing. However Madrid have so much strength in depth and will be boosted by the return of Casemiro and it’s hard to see them not having enough to win the game over the course of 90 minutes.
