There’s plenty riding on this Asturian derby which will take centre stage in the Segunda Division on Monday night. Aside from local pride in what is one of Spanish football’s fiercest rivalries, both sides have a real need for points as they go in pursuit of their respective targets.
Sporting Gijon would move to within a point of the play-off places with victory here. They’ve won 4 of their last 6 league games and have collected 4 points from their 2 games since the restart. They went into the resumption as one of several mid-table teams whose seasons could yet head in either direction but a 2-0 win at Alcorcon last time out, looks to have absolutely extinguished any lingering relegation worries and they can now perhaps afford to take a few risks and really target a late charge into the play-offs.
As for Real Oviedo, securing survival was always going to be the only objective on their return to action. On paper their opening two fixtures offered them a chance to move away from the drop-zone but home draws against Ponferradina and Depor ensured they remain in the bottom four and in deep trouble. They squandered a 2-0 lead to only draw 2-2 against the Galicians last time out and there is added pressure on what is always a high stakes game as a result.
There hasn’t been an away win in a league Asturian derby since way back in October 2001 and Oviedo haven’t won a Segunda División game at El Molinon since a famous 6-0 win in 1956. It’s safe to say that this would be a fantastic time for them to end that wait.

These games are invariably tight affairs, none more so than a dour 0-0 draw between the sides earlier in the season. Oviedo are unbeaten in 4 but they’ve not really hit the ground running since the restart and it feels like the momentum is with Sporting, who have taken more points from their last 6 games than any other team in the league. They could just edge this to creep further towards the play-off places and shove their rivals further in the direction of the Segunda B.
