The late game in the Segunda Division on Thursday comes from Madrid where two sides who are on the fringes of the play-off picture meet. Alcorcon are two points better off than Sporting Gijon heading into this game but both sides will need a strong finish to the season if they are going to seriously challenge for the top six.
Alcorcon certainly gave their resumption to the season the perfect start. They went to 2nd placed Zaragoza and won 3-1 in their first game back, in many respects the standout result from the opening matchday in the Segunda Division following the restart. They actually remain unbeaten away from home, but have remarkably lost 8 times at home in the league this term. If there is one team which may actually benefit from playing behind closed doors, it’s almost certainly them.
They are up against a Sporting Gijon side that has lost half of their away fixtures this season in the Spanish second tier. Their ability to win just 3 times on the road is a big reason why they are currently outside the top six rather than being well placed to kick on and make a serious challenge for promotion.
Sporting returned to action with a goalless draw away to Depor and they will have one eye on the big Asturian derby on Monday when it comes to team selection here.
