Tuesday night’s Segunda Division actions get underway at the Estadio Anxo Carro in Galicia. Lugo are playing host to Real Zaragoza in a game that will have real implications on the picture at both ends of the Spanish second tier.
Lugo are certainly in the relegation battle but they dealt their survival hopes a huge boost by winning away to fellow strugglers Racing Santander at the weekend. They are now unbeaten in 6 league games and look to have managed to maintain the positive momentum they built up before the break. They are a point outside the relegation zone as a result of that win but will start as underdogs here.
Real Zaragoza were in even better form at the time coronavirus started to take hold in Spain, having gone 10 league games without defeat to propel themselves into an automatic promotion position. However it was a disastrous return to action for Víctor Fernández’s side as they lost 3-1 at home to Alcorcon at the weekend. Their miserable day was compounded by the sending off of keeper Cristian Alvarez which will see him miss this game through suspension.
The visitors can at least take confidence from their strong away record this season. They average 1.69 points per game on their travels, only losing 3 times. Only Alcorcon have a better away record. Lugo meanwhile have a slightly mixed home record but have clearly improved since the appointment of Curro Torres at the turn of the year.

We might just see a bit of an upset here. There is real pressure on Zaragoza’s players to end the club’s lengthy stay in the second tier and the early signs are that they really haven’t benefited from the break to the season. Lugo meanwhile will take real belief from that victory in Santander and will go into this game with renewed confidence and will fancy they can move further away from trouble.
