Getafe vs Espanyol Preview

Tuesday’s action in LaLiga commences with two games at 19:30 local time. At the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, Getafe will be hoping to get back to winning ways against an Espanyol side that had pretty much the perfect weekend as they won their game while all their relegation rivals slipped up.

Getafe meanwhile suffered a blow to their Champions League hopes as they sank to a 2-1 defeat at Granada. Ahead through David Timor’s goal, they looked to be heading for an excellent road win until they uncharacteristically threw things away with some sloppy defending and poor goalkeeping allowing Granada in for two late goals to turn the game on its head. Jose Bordalas would have been angry with that and will be keen for his team to immediately turn things around here.

While this may be a home game against LaLiga’s bottom club, this will be a much tougher game than immediately meets the eye for Geta. Espanyol have improved since appointing Abelardo and investing heavily in January. They benefited from an early sending off to Alaves’ goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco at the weekend but were still impressive as they completely dominated the game and sealed a 2-0 victory.

The hosts will be boosted by the returns of Jaime Mata, Mauro Arambarri and Nemanja Maksimovic from suspensions here. All three should start for Getafe with Angel Rodriguez also potentially coming in to form a new front two from the Granada game. Espanyol are less likely to make wholesale changes but they did somewhat surprisingly leave top scorer Raul De Tomas on the bench last time out and he may come in to partner Wu Lei in attack.

Getafe vs Espanyol Predictions

Score Prediction: 1-1 Draw

Espanyol perhaps benefited more than any other LaLiga team from the break. With just 20 points from their opening 27 games, they were staring perilously at the threat of relegation but Saturday’s win over Alaves could be a real momentum shift for them. There is quality in their squad and they look capable of getting a result here against a Getafe side that may struggle to immediately get back to their usual high-intensity ways.
