Real Madrid vs Eibar Preview

Nowhere will La Liga’s strange new world seem more bizarre than the sight of Real Madrid running out to play a competitive home game at what is effectively a Segunda B stadium. The 6,000 capacity Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano, which usually only hosts reserve team games, will be the venue as Los Blancos resume their title pursuit against Eibar on Sunday.

Real Madrid have been practising at the stadium which lies on their training ground complex so there will be some familiarity but it remains to be seen how much of a disadvantage it is for them to be playing away from the Bernabeu, which is being renovated. The break to the season may at least have worked in Real’s favour to some extent given they weren’t in great form with 4 defeats in their last 7 competitive games. That run of matches did include a clasico victory over Barcelona but they surrendered top spot by losing at Betis in their most recent league outing.

As for Eibar, they are hovering above the relegation zone in 16th place but are many people’s tips to go down. With such a tough opening game, they could easily slip into the relegation zone after the first round of fixtures if other results go against them. Eibar were in poor form at the time the season came to a halt having lost 4 of their previous 5 matches including a damaging home loss against Mallorca in their most recent home game.

It’ll be interesting to see how José Luis Mendilibar uses what is one of the older squads in the league and he may look to keep some players fresh for the home derby with Athletic Club on Wednesday. He will at least be forced into one change from their most recent game with Gonzalo Escalante suspended.

As for Real Madrid, the break has given them a chance to get Eden Hazard fit again and he should line up in attack here alongside Karim Benzema. Zinedine Zidane has tinkered with the shape of his midfield throughout the campaign but may opt to go with Isco in his preferred number 10 role with Casemiro, Toni Kroos and Fede Valverde behind.

Real Madrid vs Eibar Predictions

Score Prediction: 3-0 Real Madrid

The strange venue adds a bit of uncertainty and this may well feel a bit like a training match. That won’t necessarily be to Real Madrid’s disadvantage though as clearly they are technically by far the superior team and they ought to run out comfortable winners here against an unconvincing Eibar side.
