Tenerife head to the Estadio Fernando Torres on Friday evening for a showdown with Fuenlabrada in the Spanish Segunda Division. Fuenla made a managerial change just days before the lockdown brought an end to football in Spain and remarkably three months on, new boss José Ramón Sandoval is still waiting to take charge of his first game.
These two sides are level on points, in 12th and 13th in the table. Therefore we’ve every reason to expect a close game here between two teams whose position almost epitomises just how tight things are in this league. Fuenla and Tenerife are both only 4 points above the relegation zone yet a bright start following the resumption could easily propel either back into play-off contention with the sides currently 7 points shy of Elche in 6th.
In truth, that’s unlikely for Fuenlabrada who will be content to just beat the drop in what is their first ever season at this level. It was a campaign which started brilliantly with 3 straight wins to kick things off but you have to go way back to December 1st for Fuenla’s last league victory. Since then they’ve gone 13 Segunda matches without picking up maximum points leading to the dismissal of Mere in March.
Tenerife meanwhile have in some respects done the reverse. They’ve recovered well from a slow start to the season and were one team that almost certainly did not benefit from the break caused by coronavirus. Indeed they are currently top of the Segunda form table with 17 points from their last 8 games.

Had this game been played out before the break, all the momentum would have been with Tenerife but this will be a bit like the start of a brand new season and the form book largely goes out the window. That certainly doesn’t benefit the visitors and with an experienced new manager at the helm, Fuenla might just be able to cause something of an upset to break their winless streak.
