Valencia vs Atalanta Preview

Valencia face what is almost mission impossible on Tuesday night as they look to overturn a 4-1 1st Leg deficit against Atalanta in the Champions League last 16. Even with a big Mestalla crowd cheering them on it would have been difficult, but this game will now be played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus.

That will make it a strange experience for all involved but it will be really hard for Valencia to build up the kind of momentum that can spark comebacks on nights like this. They should at least be able to name a stronger eleven than they were able to in the 1st Leg when their makeshift defence was brutally exploited by an attacking Atalanta side.

However none of their recent performances really suggest they are going to be able to get back into this tie. Valencia have taken 4 points from 3 league games since the 1st Leg and only once this season have they won a match by a 3 goal margin. That was at home in this competition against Lille when they were 4-1 victors. A repeat on Tuesday would see this tie go to Extra Time.

Atalanta did showcase plenty of defensive flaws themselves in the 1st Leg so it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that Valencia can score 3 goals in this game. However it’s very hard to see Atalanta not getting at least one away goal. They have been scoring for fun all season in Serie A with 70 goals scored in 25 league matches.

They’ve only actually played one match since the 1st Leg due to the problems in northern Italy right now. That was away from home at Lecce and they scored seven times in a convincing victory.

Valencia vs Atalanta Predictions

Score Prediction: 2-2 Draw

If the 1st Leg is anything to go by, this should be a lot of fun to watch and it’s a shame that there will be nobody in the stadium to enjoy it. Valencia have to throw caution to the wind at some point but Atalanta have plenty of attacking quality in their ranks and they are capable of bettering Valencia’s away goal tally which would effectively kill off this tie.
