Eibar vs Real Sociedad Preview

There is a rearranged game in La Liga this Tuesday as Eibar play host to Real Sociedad in a Gipuzkoan derby. The smallest province in Spain is home to two top flight clubs but Eibar have plenty of work to do if they are going to ensure that will still be the case next season, particularly following a damaging weekend defeat.

This fixture was originally called off due to air contamination following the collapse of a landfill site near Eibar. As a result, Eibar have been left with 3 league games in the space of 7 days, with La Liga somewhat unhelpfully rescheduling their clash with Real Madrid to this coming Friday.

On Saturday, they were beaten 2-1 at home by a Mallorca side that was previously winless on the road. That result has left the Basque minnows just 2 points above the relegation zone which makes it all the more important that they get some form of result here.

Real Sociedad will be in no mood to do their neighbours any favours though. La Real can move into the top four with victory and Champions League qualification is starting to look like an increasingly realistic target for Imanol’s side. They were beaten 1-0 at Barcelona at the weekend but rested the likes of Joseba Zaldua, Igor Zubeldia and Mikel Oyarzabal with this game in mind.

After a busy start to the year given their fine run to the Copa del Rey Final, Real Sociedad may shuffle their pack again here with burnout a real risk for some of their young players. Eibar meanwhile have some fresh injury problems following their weekend defeat which will force them into changes with Pedro León, Sergi Enrich and Pape Diop all unavailable here.

10/3 UPDATE – This will also be the first match to be played behind closed doors after La Liga announced measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus by playing games with no fans for the next two weeks.

Eibar vs Real Sociedad Predictions

Score Prediction: 1-0 Real Sociedad

Eibar are a difficult side to read with 6 wins and 6 defeats so far this season at Ipurua in La Liga. Those defeats include games against Alaves, Mallorca and Espanyol but they have beaten Atletico Madrid and Sevilla at home. They do have a really good record in this particular fixture but Real Sociedad are a tougher nut to crack these days. La Real have won 6 of their last 7 in all competitions and they may just edge this too.
