Espanyol vs Atletico Madrid Preview
Espanyol’s Europa League adventure came to an end on Thursday night and they can now firmly focus all their energies on 13 ‘cup finals’ to come in La Liga. This won’t be the easiest of the bunch against an Atletico Madrid side that will have grown in belief after two excellent victories.
Espanyol have managed to turn over a few of the big boys in recent years at the RCDE Stadium and they did of course hold Barcelona to a draw in Abelardo’s first game in charge. However it is still just one home league win all season for Espanyol and that came against fellow strugglers Mallorca who have an even more hopeless away record.
Momentum is key for Atletico Madrid at this stage in their season and they will want to keep that bounce going from the surprise win over Liverpool for as long as possible. They fought back to beat Villarreal 3-1 last time out in La Liga and another victory would be very useful here given they are still involved in a genuine battle just to make the top four and the Champions League again next season.
Espanyol rested a few key men in the Europa League and the likes of Leandro Cabrera and Adrian Embarba should rotate back in here. Raúl de Tomás missed that game but Espanyol are hopeful he will be fit enough to return for this one. The forward has netted in all of his five games for the club so far.
Atleti meanwhile are slowly starting to get some players available again and this should be closer to their strongest eleven although they may still opt to start with Angel Correa in attack alongside Alvaro Morata.

Score Prediction: 1-1 Draw
A draw looks the most likely outcome here. 50% of Atleti’s away league fixtures this season have ended up like that and against an improved Espanyol outfit who are starting to play with a bit more belief and quality, Diego Simeone’s men may wind up having to settle for a point again.
