Athletic Bilbao vs Osasuna Preview

Athletic are back at San Mames for the second time in five days this Sunday to take on Osasuna in La Liga. There won’t be quite the same atmosphere that greeted their Copa del Rey Semi-Final against Granada but it should still be lively with Osasuna likely to bring a decent following for this local derby.

While they have made excellent progress in the Copa del Rey and played well against Granada in the week, Athletic’s recent league form has been far less convincing. Gaizka Garitano’s side have gone 8 games without victory heading into this in La Liga, taking just 5 points over that period. Only Mallorca have picked up fewer over the last eight match-days.

Osasuna haven’t been much better themselves with only 6 points from 8 games. Their home defeat in the reverse fixture, their first in the league at El Sadar in well over a year has proved something of a turning point in their season. The same can be said of the injury to top scorer Chimy Avila and if other results go against them, Osasuna could end this weekend in the bottom six.

The hosts do have a couple of significant absentees here with both Iker Muniain and Dani Garcia sidelined through suspension. Osasuna meanwhile will be able to name a stronger defensive unit this week with Aridane available again following a ban while Jose Arnaiz is also back in contention for a start up front having suffered from the flu.

Athletic Bilbao vs Osasuna Predictions

Score Prediction: 2-0 Athletic

Athletic really did play well in the week and probably should have scored more than once against Granada. Osasuna will be a bit more attack-minded but you do start to worry a bit for the Pamplona side who have conceded 7 goals in their last 2 games and haven’t really found a solution to the absence of Avila yet. Athletic should emerge victorious here to end their winless streak in league football.
