Valencia vs Atletico Madrid Preview
Valencia and Atletico Madrid clash in a heavyweight Friday night showdown in La Liga this week. Neither side has looked at all convincing in recent matches and both coaches could really do with a result here with a bit of pressure starting to build on both Albert Celades and Diego Simeone.
Los Che head into this following a 3-0 defeat at Getafe, in what was easily their worst performance of the season. They were second best in every department last weekend as Valencia lost ground on one of their main rivals for Champions League qualification. They face another one of them here and for the first time in many years there are genuine doubts as to whether or not Atleti will make the top four.
Atletico Madrid did at least put three points on the board last time out, although it came courtesy of an unconvincing 1-0 home win against Granada. Angel Correa’s goal is the only one an Atleti player has scored in their last four games in La Liga. They head into this game with three injured strikers and an average of just 1 goal per game this season in the Spanish top flight.
Valencia have selection problems of their own in the final third and may use Goncalo Guedes as a makeshift forward here. They can at least take confidence from an unbeaten home league record this term though with only Real Madrid and Barcelona having picked up more points on their own patch than Los Che.
Valencia vs Atletico Madrid Predictions
Score Prediction: 1-0 Valencia
Atletico Madrid really don’t convince right now and they are not playing anywhere near well enough to suggest they will come to Mestalla and end Valencia’s unbeaten home league record. Los Che were so bad at Getafe last time out that there just has to be a response here and they have shown they are a team that can put in a performance when it matters in a big game as their recent home win over Barcelona proved.
The hosts should edge this but it may not live up to its billing as a rare Friday night glamour fixture.
