Real Valladolid vs Villarreal Preview

Villarreal head to Valladolid this Saturday looking to put the disappointment of a shock Copa del Rey exit behind them. They take on a spirited Real Valladolid outfit who are fresh from a vital win in a relegation six-pointer last weekend. Another victory here would give them real breathing space on the relegation scrap that is building beneath them.

That will be the objective for Sergio’s side who went to Mallorca and won 1-0 last weekend. Prior to that they hadn’t won a league game since the reverse fixture against the Balearic Islanders back in early November. Only one side has scored fewer goals than Real Valladolid this season but they do boast La Liga’s 6th best defensive record and they do seem to have discovered a formula that works for them and it’s one that looks like it may well keep them up again.

They take on a Villarreal side that has been in pretty good form overall. They’ve won 9 of their last 11 in all competitions but bizarrely their two defeats over that period came in what on paper were two of their most winnable games – at home to Espanyol in La Liga and away to Mirandes in midweek in the Copa del Rey. That result would have hurt given this is a club that is desperate to finally win a major trophy after several close shaves over the past couple of decades.

They can at least now try to refocus their efforts on securing European football through the league. They are well placed to compete for that after their recent good results but they will have to cope without the suspended Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa here which is a significant blow, particularly in a game like this.

Real Valladolid vs Villarreal Predictions

Score Prediction: 1-1 Draw

There may be a bit of fatigue for Villarreal here after their exploits in the Copa and that could be a problem against a hard-working Real Valladolid side that was eliminated earlier on in the competition. There is still something of a soft core to this Villarreal outfit too, certainly with Anguissa missing so the hosts look capable of getting a result here.

Villarreal do have players of sufficient quality to break down this Valladolid defence at least once though and the new pairing of Gerard Moreno and Paco Alcacer up top is potentially a very good one. We’re going for a score draw.
