Real Betis vs Barcelona Preview

Three days on from a Copa del Rey exit in Bilbao, Barcelona face another really big test as they travel to Seville to take on Real Betis in La Liga this Sunday. This of course marks Quique Setien’s return to the Benito Villamarin and it’s unlikely to be anything other than a hostile welcome for the Barça boss who was hounded out of the club by Betis fans last season.

Whether Real Betis have improved since making the decision to sack Setien and replace him with Rubi will divide opinions. They finished 10th last season under Setien and are currently 12th this term. They would be higher were it not for a really poor start to the campaign and over the past couple of months at least, there have been noticeable improvements in Betis even if that hasn’t always produced better results.

Barcelona come into this game after another really poor week which has included the fallout from Eric Abidal’s ill-judged comments, speculation that Leo Messi might leave this summer and then a late cup exit in Bilbao. There were times in the game at San Mames where Barcelona played perhaps as well as they have done so far under Setien before they failed to convert their chances and were ultimately made to pay.

Leo Messi put on an absolute masterclass in this fixture last term and how Barcelona could do with another such performance here. The Catalans are though hampered by the suspension of Gerard Pique and that has to be a big worry with Samuel Umtiti still struggling to replicate the form of two seasons ago.

Real Betis vs Barcelona Predictions

Score Prediction: 2-1 Real Betis

This has all the makings of another setback for Setien’s Barça revolution. The Benito Villamarin will be loud and hostile and Betis have enough quality in their ranks to open up a Barcelona defence that is missing its leader. Unless there are improvements at both ends, this could easily result in a 3rd defeat in 7 games for the Catalans since they sacked Ernesto Valverde.
