Espanyol vs Mallorca Preview

The Sunday action in La Liga kicks off with a simply massive game at the RCDE Stadium as Espanyol and Mallorca clash in a relegation six-pointer. It’s almost impossible to envisage a scenario where both of these teams survive so if there’s a winner here, it will be a very significant moment in this year’s relegation scrap.

Espanyol you sense, simply have to win this game. The board seems to have realised that and they’ve responded by slashing ticket prices which looks set to see the RCDE Stadium full to capacity, which is a very rare occurrence. Espanyol have taken 5 points from 4 games since appointing Abelardo and while there have been improvements and there is now more quality after a busy January, it’s points that they need as we head into the business end of the season.

Mallorca will feel as though they missed a chance to at least ease their relegation worries last weekend. They were beaten 1-0 at home by Real Valladolid, a desperate result given they are a team that is heavily reliant on their home form. They travel to Barcelona this weekend still outside the relegation zone but only by the very finest of margins.

In terms of team news, Marc Roca returns from suspension which is a fresh boost for the hosts. They are likely to continue with Jonathan Calleri and Raul de Tomas up front. The latter has scored in all of his 4 games for Espanyol since joining from Benfica for big money in January.

Mallorca meanwhile should be at or very close to full strength too with Antonio Raillo fit to start in defence again.

Espanyol vs Mallorca Predictions

Score Prediction: 3-1 Espanyol

This feels like a ‘make or break’ kind of game for both teams. Espanyol have only got 4 points at home this season while Mallorca have only collected 1 away. Both records are the worst in the division by some margin.

Of the two, it’s the hosts though that has shown more sign of a response to their problems, clearly helped by the kind of January investment that simply wasn’t possible for Mallorca. With RDT in fine form, they could finally put 3 home points on the board here at the 12th time of asking this season.
