Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad Match Preview & Prediction - Copa del Rey

Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad Preview

A cracking Thursday evening of Copa del Rey Quarter-Final action commences at the Bernabeu with Real Madrid playing host to Real Sociedad. Los Blancos are aiming to win the competition for only the third time since 1993 but they could be pushed hard here by an exciting young Real Sociedad side.

There is plenty to be optimistic about right now for Real Madrid fans. Their side are topping La Liga and head into this game fresh from a derby win over Atleti on Saturday. Despite very few changes, at least in terms of a regular starting XI that only features one player who wasn’t at the club last season, Los Blancos have now clearly turned a corner under Zinedine Zidane.

Defensively they have been outstanding this term and while the injury struggles of the likes of Eden Hazard and Gareth Bale are a blow, their squad possesses sufficient depth to maintain a challenge on multiple fronts.

Real Sociedad’s squad is certainly thinner but a number of young players have enjoyed breakthrough campaigns, none more so than Martin Ødegaard who is set to line up against his parent club again here. La Real have won 6 of their last 9 games in all competitions but they have suffered disappointing defeats in their two most recent away matches in La Liga, going down 3-0 at Betis and 2-1 at Leganes.

Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad Predictions

Score Prediction: 2-1 Real Madrid

Much has been made of this new-look Copa del Rey and overall the changes have been very positive. However the congested nature of the competition, with the majority of rounds still taking place in consecutive weeks in January and February still favours the bigger clubs and the bigger squads.

With home advantage too, Real Madrid should be able to safely negotiate this tie and will take confidence from having beaten Real Sociedad 3-1 here in La Liga less than two months ago. La Real’s recent away showings haven’t been that convincing either so what now looks to be a consistent and very solid Madrid outfit should progress. The absence of Casemiro from the Madrid squad is significant though and certainly increases the likelihood that the visitors at least get on the scoresheet.
