Mirandes vs Villarreal Preview
The new Copa del Rey has really captured the imagination this year but in the last sixteen, one by one, the lower league teams dropped out until there was only Mirandes left. Against the odds though, the Segunda Division side ensured the Quarter-Finals wouldn’t just be a top flight affair, as they saw off Sevilla in convincing fashion. They’ll be aiming to do it all again this week against Villarreal.
Mirandes are a club that does have plenty of recent cup pedigree. They were Quarter-Finalists in this competition as recently as 2016 and only one other lower league team has got that far since then. They made it all the way to the Semi-Finals in 2011-12, remarkable given they were a Segunda B side at the time. That run really got going when they defeated Villarreal 3-1 on aggregate in the last 32 so the omens are certainly good for this one.
Nowadays, Mirandes are a Segunda Division outfit and they are hovering in mid-table. However they are only 3 points outside of the play-off places in a congested league and significantly they’ve a terrific home record and are unbeaten in 14 matches in all competitions at the Estadio Municipal de Anduva heading into this. That run includes cup victories over top flight Celta Vigo and Sevilla over the past fortnight.
This might just be tougher though given Villarreal are one of the form teams in Spain right now. The Yellow Submarine have won 9 of their last 10 in all competitions, a run that has propelled them into Champions League contention in La Liga. They might also fancy that they can claim major silverware for the first time in the club’s history in this competition.
Mirandes vs Villarreal Predictions
Score Prediction: 2-1 Mirandes
This is a tricky one to call. Mirandes are on a roll and their success in the cup in recent years can at least in part be attributed to the difficulties teams have going to their stadium, which is one of the coldest in Spain. It’s likely to be only a shade above freezing by the time this one concludes which could make it tricky for the visitors. Villarreal weren’t great in the last round of the Copa del Rey away to Segunda side Rayo Vallecano but ultimately eased through with Santi Cazorla coming off the bench to grab hold of the game.
Cazorla is 35 and played the full 90 minutes on Sunday in La Liga. It’s a big ask to expect him to come back 72 hours later and do it all again so Villarreal’s key man is likely to be on the bench here initially and that could just give Mirandes a real window of opportunity to play this game on their terms and potentially cause another upset.
