Benzema Goal settles Madrid Derby

The third Madrid derby of the season, finally produced a goal from open play and it was a decisive one as Karim Benzema’s Second Half strike defeated Atleti at the Bernabeu. It had been a testing game for Real Madrid prior to that. They headed into the derby in much the better spirits but it was Atleti who looked the more likely side to score for much of the First Half. However as has often been the case of late, Real Madrid dug deep and ground out a 1-0 win, with a little help from two Half-Time substitutions from Zinedine Zidane.

Real still hold a 3 point advantage at the top of La Liga after Barcelona defeated Levante 2-1 on Sunday night. Ansu Fati scored a brace for Barcelona in a deserved win but Quique Setien’s side do now face a couple of real tests with away games to come against Athletic Club and Real Betis this week in league and cup.

Getafe see off Athletic to climb to 3rd

Remarkably Getafe are now 3rd in La Liga after a really impressive win in Bilbao on Sunday. Damian Suarez and Jaime Mata scored the goals as Geta inflicted on Athletic just their second league defeat. José Bordalás still struggles to attract many plaudits in Spain but the job he has done with this club is nothing short incredible. Getafe’s performances this season are only really building on what they’ve done over the past two years. However they have gradually added more attacking weapons as time has passed by and the fact they have scored 10 more league goals than Atletico Madrid and 4 more than Sevilla this season is testament to them being far more than just an organised, defensive side.

Real Valladolid win Relegation Six-Pointer

There are similarities between Getafe and Real Valladolid. The latter probably doesn’t offer quite as much in the final third but Sergio has clearly instilled a real spirit in a team that continues to grind out results and make pundits eat their words. They picked up a vital win this weekend away to fellow strugglers Real Mallorca. Enes Ünal’s 2nd Half strike sealed a 1-0 victory which leaves Valladolid 7 points clear of the relegation zone and looking good to ensure they retain their top flight status despite limited investment since their promotion to La Liga in 2018.

Matchday 22 in Numbers

  • 17 year old Ansu Fati became the youngest player to score 2 goals in a single game in La Liga.
  • His 2 goals came in the space of just 104 seconds, both assisted by Leo Messi.
  • Real Madrid ended a run of 6 home Madrid derbies in La Liga without a win.
  • Getafe moved up to 3rd place. Their 3 main strikers (Mata, Molina, Angel) have a combined age of 100 and all arrived on free transfers but have now scored a total of 19 league goals this season, just 3 fewer than the entire Atleti squad.
  • Villarreal’s 3-1 win over Osasuna was their 9th victory in 10 matches in all competitions.
