Athletic Bilbao vs Getafe Preview

Two of La Liga’s best defences clash in Bilbao this Sunday as Athletic play host to Getafe. The visitors are now five points above their opponents in the league table so this is an important game in terms of Athletic’s hopes of getting back into Europe and it’s one they really need to win.

68% of Athletic’s points this season have come at San Mames and that’s despite them having played one more away game. Only Real Madrid and Barcelona can better their average of 2.1 points per game in front of their own fans however right now they are a team that can’t stop drawing. All of their last 5 in La Liga have finished level and they were even taken all the way to penalties in a dramatic Copa del Rey match at Tenerife in midweek.

In recent seasons Getafe have also been very prone to drawing games, particularly away. However they head into this one having won 5 and lost 2 of their last 7. They are one of the form teams in the division and perhaps significantly their early Copa del Rey exit has given them a bit of an advantage on the sides around them, at least at this point in the season.

The visitors should be at full strength as they head north here. It will be the usual 4-4-2 and while it doesn’t take a genius to figure out how Getafe are going to play, countering their style is a real challenge.

Athletic are likely to go with youngster Asier Villalibre up top again and he has caught the eye, offering some hope that he could be the solution to their search for a number 9 which has been a problem position for a couple of years now with Aritz Aduriz understandably on the decline given his age.

Athletic Bilbao vs Getafe Predictions

Score Prediction: 0-0 Draw

Only the two big Madrid clubs have better defensive records than this pair in La Liga this season and it’s very hard to see much goalmouth action in this game. Athletic have drawn their last 5 in La Liga, including two 0-0’s and Getafe would most likely be content with a repeat of that here. A bore draw could be on the cards.
