Mirandes vs Sevilla Preview

Mirandes are one lower league team that did frequently manage to put together some decent cup runs under the old format so it’s perhaps no surprise that they are the only side remaining in this year’s Copa del Rey from outside the top flight. The odds are against them heading into Thursday’s last 16 clash with Sevilla but they can take confidence from their performances until this point.

The side from Northern Spain sent Celta Vigo packing in the last round on this ground. Antonio Sanchez Navarro hit a 114th minute winner to settle that clash and Mirandes are in strong overall form too with no defeats in their last 8 competitive outings. Despite that they are only currently ranked in mid-table in the Segunda Division and you wonder whether this might be a challenge too far against a strong Sevilla outfit.

The Andalusians have enjoyed plenty of success in the cups across the first two decades of the 20th Century and they have to be seen as one of the main contenders to lift the trophy this year. They named a strong side last week as they saw off Levante at the RSP in the last round, a clear indicator that Julen Lopetegui intends to take this competition seriously.

Sevilla may start with Ever Banega in midfield given he should be fresh having been banned for the weekend win over Granada. Lopetegui may also hand a first start to January signing Youssef En-Nesyri up front. Mirandes meanwhile are likely to use the same approach to last week when they played 4-4-1-1 against Celta.

Mirandes vs Sevilla Predictions

Score Prediction: 2-0 Sevilla

Other than Real Madrid, Sevilla are perhaps the most consistent side in Spain right now and they have been much stronger away this season than in recent years. That bodes well for them here and with their coach having made it clear that they will take this competition seriously, Sevilla look like they will win this game with relative comfort to send the final lower league team packing from this year’s Copa del Rey.
