Zaragoza vs Real Madrid Preview
This promises to a great occasion at La Romareda, which is one of Spanish football’s best grounds but one that has been starved of big nights in recent years. Zaragoza have stagnated in the Segunda Division but they are a club with real cup pedigree having won this competition six times, a record bettered by only five other teams. That includes two triumphs this century, the same number as Los Blancos.
Zaragoza take really good form into this game. They’ve won 8 of their last 9 in all competitions to climb into Segunda Division promotion contention whilst progressing in the Copa del Rey. They comfortably sent top flight Mallorca packing last week but this clearly will be a tougher challenge although they’ll be hoping a big crowd can help roar them on to a famous victory.
Real Madrid meanwhile have perfected the art of winning ugly and that can only bode well for their prospects of getting their hands on some silverware this season. They saw off the challenge of Unionistas last week to book their place in the Copa del Rey last 16 and edged out Valladolid in La Liga at the weekend to go top of the table. They continue to look a bit short on goal threats but they now boast the best defensive record in Europe’s big five leagues and they should be able to field a strong back four here.
It’s at the other end of the pitch where they don’t exactly convince with the likes of Vinicius, Luka Jovic and Brahim Diaz expected to feature here. Zaragoza will fancy they can at least stay in this game and will know that if they can net the opening goal, they will be in with a really good chance. Their biggest name is that of Shinji Kagawa who surprisingly made the move to Zaragoza in the summer.
Zaragoza vs Real Madrid Predictions
Score Prediction: 1-1 Draw (90 minutes)
Zaragoza are on a roll at the moment and they have won their last 4 matches at La Romareda. Therefore this won’t necessarily be any easier than some of Real Madrid’s recent league games, such as their 1-0 win at Real Valladolid at the weekend. With the key Madrid derby to come on Saturday, Zinedine Zidane is likely to rest some legs and that offers Zaragoza a real chance to at least take this to Extra Time.
