Atletico Madrid vs Leganes predictions, H2H and match preview for this Sunday’s game in La Liga. Read on for analysis and predicted line-ups ahead of this derby clash in the capital.
Atletico Madrid vs Leganes Preview
Sunday’s action in La Liga kicks off with a Madrid derby at the Wanda Metropolitano. These are slightly worrying times for fans of both Atleti and Leganes though. The former have just experienced perhaps their worst week since Diego Simeone took charge almost a decade ago while Leganes now look like the side most likely to drop down into the Segunda Division with a mountain to climb if they are going to avoid relegation from this position.
Atleti’s nightmare week started with a 2-0 defeat at Eibar in La Liga last weekend, the first time they’d dropped points at Ipurua in the top flight. That left them 8 points adrift at the top of La Liga and surely out of the title race. A few days later their Copa del Rey hopes were also dashed by an embarrassing exit away to Segunda B side Cultural Leonesa. With red hot Liverpool to come in the Champions League, it’s looking like it will be a trophy-less season for Cholo’s men.
This may be the last time these sides clash for some time. Leganes were beaten 3-0 at home in a Madrid derby last time out by Getafe and their return of 14 points from 20 games makes it very hard to see how they salvage things from here, particularly having sold their biggest attacking weapon Youssef En-Nesyri. Overall Javier Aguirre has done a pretty good job since taking over but he could really do with some fresh recruits before the month is out if Lega are going to have a fighting chance.
Atleti are likely to be missing the likes of Koke, Kieran Trippier and Jose Gimenez which doesn’t exactly help matters at a time when their forwards are struggling for goals with Joao Felix enduring a difficult first season in Spain. Leganes meanwhile are missing Ruben Perez to suspension while key centre-back Dimitrios Siovas is also an injury doubt.
Atletico Madrid vs Leganes Predictions
Score Prediction: 1-0 Atleti
This feels like it might be a classic case of 1-0 Atleti. Leganes will play with a back five when they don’t have the ball and are capable of frustrating but they are unlikely to offer much of a goal threat. The hosts ought to be able to find the breakthrough but it might not be pretty.
