Valencia vs Real Madrid Preview

The Spanish Super Cup moves into a new era this week with the competition featuring four teams for the first time and controversially taking place in January in Saudi Arabia. The first Semi-Final sees Copa del Rey holders Valencia take on Real Madrid who scraped into the competition thanks to their 3rd place finish in La Liga.

Valencia came within seconds of beating Real Madrid only a few weeks ago at the Mestalla so they should head into this game with plenty of belief. Los Che have found their feet under Albert Celades now and they are unbeaten in 7 games in all competitions. That run has seen them pick up some vital results, not least that excellent win at Ajax in December which secured Champions League progression.

Real Madrid meanwhile have only been defeated once in a domestic setting this season and while this match takes place thousands of miles from the Spanish capital, it is still technically a domestic fixture. They got 2020 off to a very impressive start with a 3-0 win at Getafe at the weekend to move level on points with Barcelona at the top of La Liga. Although like all the teams involved, the Supercopa will not be Zinedine Zidane’s number one priority, this is his first chance to collect silverware in his second spell in charge of Los Blancos.

There may be a bit of rotation from both coaches here but Real are limited in attack by injuries to the likes of Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard. Given their goalscoring problems of late, that has to be a concern and Valencia have every reason to see this as an opportunity to turn over Los Blancos although they too have a doubt over forward Rodrigo Moreno.

Valencia vs Real Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: 1-0 Valencia

Real Madrid have been heavily dependent on Karim Benzema for goals this season so his absence is a real blow here. No other Madrid player has scored more than 3 times in La Liga in 2019/20. Valencia showed they are capable of matching Los Blancos in the recent league clash and if they can show the same appetite for silverware that they managed in the Copa del Rey Final last spring, they could just pull off another upset.
