Spanish Super Cup match preview

Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid Preview

The second Spanish Super Cup Semi-Final sees Barcelona and Atletico Madrid clash for a place in Sunday’s showdown when the first silverware of the 2019/20 season will be decided. Both sides are expected to name quite strong sides for this match and a trophy would be a timely boost for both clubs who have had difficult campaigns so far to some extent at least.

Barcelona have struggled on their travels and were held to a draw by local rivals Espanyol at the weekend, the latest away setback for Ernesto Valverde and his team. On a more encouraging note as far as Barcelona are concerned, their record against Atleti is a strong one in recent years with Leo Messi’s brilliant winner on match-day 15 at the Wanda Metropolitano settling the only meeting so far this term.

Diego Simeone must be sick of the sight of Barcelona by now given his failure to defeat them in La Liga as Atleti boss. However he will be encouraged by some improved recent form from his side with Atleti reeling off 3 straight league victories to close the gap on both Barça and Real in the Spanish title race. Los Rojiblancos haven’t won any domestic silverware since the 2014 Supercopa so they will be hungry for victory here even if other competitions may be a greater priority.

We should see strong sides from both coaches as a result although Barcelona are without Ousmane Dembele due to injury and won’t risk either Arthur or Marc-André ter Stegen who are carrying knocks and have been left at home. Atleti meanwhile will be missing Diego Costa, Thomas Lemar and Sime Vrsaljko. Lemar may have played his last game for the club with a January move looking likely.

Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: 2-1 Barcelona

These clubs are familiar foes and this is likely to be another even game between the pair but as has so often been the case, you’d fancy Barcelona’s superior finishing abilities to prove decisive. There have been signs that Messi, Suarez and Griezmann are starting to click and we could see more evidence of that here with the Catalans looking capable of securing a place in the Final.
