Valencia vs Eibar Preview

The opening game on Saturday in La Liga comes from Mestalla where Valencia open the new year up against Eibar who have been something of a bogey team for them in recent years. After a rocky start to this season on and off the pitch, Los Che ended 2019 on a positive note and they’ll be hoping to continue their rise up the division with victory here. Eibar meanwhile are hovering above the relegation places but they do head into this one following their most convincing victory of the campaign.

Valencia would probably have been grateful for the break given the busy end to the year they went through which saw their injury problems mount up. They had particular problems up front but are hoping to have both Maxi Gomez and Rodrigo Moreno available here which will be a boost for Albert Celades. Despite those injuries, Valencia picked up 15 points from their final 8 league games in 2019, a record only 3 teams could better.

The 2010’s was unquestionably the best decade in the history of Eibar as they miraculously rose to the top flight for the first time before establishing themselves in it. They may face a battle this season to maintain their status at this level though with only four sides currently below them in the standings. The Basque minnows were impressive in their final game of 2019 though as they cruised to a 3-0 win over Granada to give themselves a bit of a buffer on the bottom three.

Any kind of result would be a bonus here for Eibar in truth but they did pick up a good point in their most recent away game at San Mames and back-to-back clean sheets will also delight boss José Luis Mendilibar given some of their defensive performances earlier in the campaign.

Valencia vs Eibar Predictions

Score Prediction: 2-1 Valencia

Valencia should be able to name their strongest league XI for several weeks here and with home advantage and after a bit of a rest, they should be fresh to go again. That ought to be enough to help them see off Eibar despite the recent improvements we’ve seen from the Basques.
