Sevilla vs Athletic Club Preview

This is part two of a Friday night double-header in La Liga as two sides who have enjoyed strong starts to the campaign meet at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan. Victory for Sevilla would see them go level on points with Real Madrid in 2nd. Athletic meanwhile would go level with Basque rivals Real Sociedad in 5th were they to take home all the spoils.

With home advantage Sevilla are the favourites, although curiously for them they have actually picked up 6 more points away this season than they’ve managed at home. They still boast a respectable 50% home win ratio but they’ve not quite managed to turn the RSP into the fortress it has so often been yet this term. Villarreal were surprise 2-1 winners in the most recent match on this ground but Sevilla responded well with a 2-0 win at Mallorca last time out.

Athletic meanwhile head into this game following back-to-back 0-0 draws. They salvaged a point from their trip to the Bernabeu a fortnight ago but they are without a win in 3 games now and have only claimed maximum points on their travels once so far this season. An average of just 0.67 goals per game away is also a big worry and their failure to offer much of an attacking threat on the road may make it difficult for Athletic to seal European qualification which has to be the objective now this term.

Athletic’s creative problems aren’t helped by an injury to Iker Muniain. He is closing in on a return to fitness but this game is likely to come too soon. Sevilla will be without Sergio Reguilon who has had such an impressive campaign at left-back. However they should otherwise be able to name the same XI that was victorious at Mallorca in their last game.

Sevilla vs Athletic Club Predictions

Score Prediction: 1-0 Sevilla

This game sees two of La Liga’s top five defences meet. Only Atletico Madrid have conceded fewer goals than Athletic Club this season so Sevilla will have to work hard for their chances here but they do look to carry a bit more threat in attack now with Munir starting to see more game-time to ease the burden on Luuk de Jong who hasn’t looked convincing up top. The hosts may just edge this one but it could be tight.
