The new year and indeed the new decade in La Liga commences at the Estadio José Zorrilla this Friday with Real Valladolid’s clash with Leganes. These sides both look like they will be in the relegation mix come May. The visitors certainly are already facing up to the reality of a long, hard battle for survival but Real Valladolid too have hit some poor form and are currently struggling for both goals and points.
Sergio’s side have scored just once in their last six games. That was last time out in the 1-1 draw at home to Valencia. They have been tough to beat in front of their own fans this season though with Sevilla the only side to win at the José Zorrilla to date. However five home draws mean Real Valladolid still have plenty of work to do in the second half of the season if they are to guarantee themselves another year at this level.
Leganes were probably the one side who didn’t want the Christmas break to come with the South Madrid outfit having finally found some much needed form. They’ve taken 7 points from their last 3 games heading into this one including key home wins over relegation rivals Espanyol and Celta Vigo. However Lega haven’t won away all season with their return of just 3 points on the road, the second worst in La Liga.
The hosts are likely to line up 4-4-2 here and hope either Sandro or Sergi Guardiola can have a bit of joy in front of goal. They are though hampered by the suspension of Ruben Alcaraz. Leganes meanwhile will be without Dimitris Siovas again which is a blow given the Greek centre-back is such a dominant figure in their backline.

It’s hard to see this developing into a classic game to kick off the new year. Real Valladolid are struggling badly for any sort of creativity or attacking threat. Leganes appear to have turned a corner but their away record is still a poor one and it’s hard to see them getting any more than a point from this. A bore draw could be in store.
