Real Madrid vs Athletic Club Preview
This is the final fixture of the 2010’s in La Liga and it has been a poor decade for Real Madrid, at least in domestic terms. It’s one that ends on a more positive note though with Los Blancos having shaded the Clasico in midweek and looking well equipped to fight Barcelona all the way for the title. They face an Athletic Club side that hasn’t convinced on their travels this season but could still be awkward opponents.
Real Madrid felt aggrieved that they weren’t awarded at least one penalty at Camp Nou on Wednesday night. All things considered though, Zinedine Zidane would have been delighted with what he saw from his team as they managed to keep Leo Messi quiet with Casemiro putting in a particularly inspired display in midfield. They return to the Bernabeu on Sunday evening hoping to extend their unbeaten home record so far this term in all competitions.
Athletic Club are in reasonably good form themselves with just 1 defeat in their last 7 league outings. That did come in their most recent away game when they were undone by a remarkable hat-trick from Joaquin as Real Betis won 3-2 at the Benito Villamarin. They were missing a few key players that day though and they do have a few notable absentees here too.
Ander Capa who has excelled at right-back this term is suspended while they will again be without Iker Muniain to injury which does leave them a little short on genuine creative options. Real Madrid meanwhile have a doubt over Sergio Ramos but he may be fit enough to start alongside Raphael Varane. Los Blancos will again be missing Marcelo and Eden Hazard though.
Real Madrid vs Athletic Club Predictions
Score Prediction: 2-0 Real Madrid
At San Mames, this would have all the makings of a very even game but Athletic lack the tools to go away from home and really cause problems for teams as good as Real Madrid. They’ll hope that Inaki Williams can get a bit of space on the break but overall it’s a game the home team should control and ought to win.
