Eibar vs Granada Preview

After a hectic week of Copa del Rey action and of course the Clasico, La Liga is back on Friday night as Eibar face a crunch home game against Granada. The Basques are slipping towards real trouble but victory here would be a huge lift and would ensure they head into 2020 outside of the relegation zone and potentially with as much as a 5 point advantage on the bottom three.

That will be what boss José Luis Mendilibar will be hoping for here and the omens are good with Eibar having fired a total of nine goals past Granada in the last 2 meetings at Ipurua. Eibar also hit five in midweek in the Copa del Rey with Pablo de Blasis netting a 13 minute hat-trick and he may be in line for a league start here given the Basques have only netted one goal in their last five outings in the Spanish top flight, also picking up just one point.

Granada are eight points better off than Eibar in the current standings and that’s a significant advantage to have heading into the halfway point of the campaign. Diego Martinez will be aware that his side still has hard work to do though to guarantee themselves a second season at this level. They suffered a setback last weekend as they were defeated 2-1 at home by Levante and they have lost each of their last 4 away games.

In fairness, Granada have had some really tough road games of late but they will sense that Ipurua is not quite the fortress it has at times been for Eibar in recent years. Indeed 5 of the 8 visitors this season have won and Eibar will be desperate to try and turn their home form around and they may need to if they are going to avoid a real relegation scrap this term.

Eibar vs Granada Predictions

Score Prediction: 2-1 Eibar

This is a tricky one to call. Eibar don’t really convince but scoring five against admittedly lowly opponents in the Copa del Rey in midweek will have given them a timely morale boost heading into this and they did also pick up a good point last time out in Bilbao. There is a sense that Granada are no longer the surprise package that caught teams cold earlier in the season and defensively they’ve been more vulnerable of late with 2 or more conceded in 5 of their last 7 games.  Some injuries to key players haven’t helped their cause and Eibar may just nick this with home advantage but it should be close.
