Valencia vs Real Madrid Preview

This is a cracking way to round off the weekend in La Liga and the perfect appetiser ahead of the Clasico in midweek. Valencia will come into the game on a real high after a fine victory in Europe but Real Madrid are also in good form and looking much more like their former selves under Zinedine Zidane’s guidance.

Albert Celades always faced an uphill task in trying to gain the respect and support of both the Valencia dressing room and supporters given the way he took the job. Victory in Amsterdam on Tuesday and the club’s first Champions League knockout stage qualification in 7 years was a huge step in the right direction. Los Che have also won 4 of their last 5 in La Liga including a fine comeback win in the derby at Levante last weekend.

There was nothing really riding on Real Madrid’s Champions League trip to Belgium which enabled Zidane the luxury of being able to rest players. However with the Clasico just three days after this one, the Frenchman has a tricky balancing act to play here in terms of selection. The biggest call surrounds Casemiro who is just one booking away from a ban and with no real back-up holding midfielders in the squad, Zizou may opt to leave him out here to ensure he is available for the trip to Camp Nou.

In that sense, the postponement of the original Clasico has really not helped Real Madrid given it has left them with two of their toughest matches of the season in the space of four days. The visitors also have problems at left-back with Marcelo injured and Ferland Mendy suspended.

As for Valencia, Rodrigo’s run in the side will continue with both Kevin Gameiro and Maxi Gomez suffering from injuries while Manu Vallejo and Ferran Torres are likely to be used out wide.

Valencia vs Real Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: 1-1 Draw

This is a tough one to call. Valencia are unbeaten at Mestalla in the league and did pretty comfortably beat Zidane’s Madrid here at the end of last season. The likely absence of Casemiro will make their life much easier but this match does come at the end of a really busy week for Valencia who also have a depleted squad due to injuries and a draw looks a likely outcome, a result that wouldn’t be a disaster for either side.
