On a weekend of big games, this one could go under the radar a touch but it still promises to be well worth a watch. Sevilla are going along very nicely under Julen Lopetegui and they’ll be hoping to close the gap on the ‘big two’ given the difficult fixtures Barcelona and Real Madrid have this weekend. Villarreal meanwhile could do with a win to give themselves a platform for getting their season back on track.
Sevilla currently sit in 3rd place in both the league table and the form table (past 8 games). They’ve taken 10 points from their last 4 outings but were held to a 1-1 draw at Osasuna last time out. They still look a little bit lightweight in terms of goalscoring options and they may need to adapt their style if they are going to seriously keep pace with the big guns as their current average of just 1.25 goals per game in La Liga is unlikely to be sufficient.
Villarreal by contrast average 1.75 per game but they are 12 points worse off than Sevilla. They have at times looked like they were finding a cure for the defensive issues that blighted them throughout last season but they have conceded twice or more in 4 of their last 6 matches and it’s pretty clear that problems still exist.
The Yellow Submarine are without a win in 6 heading into this with just a bit of pressure again starting to build on Javi Calleja, who was sacked this time last year only to be reappointed in January. There’s not a huge amount of reason for positivity for Villarreal heading into this although they do have a decent record here over the past couple of years and the suspension of Lucas Ocampos, Sevilla’s top scorer, is a boost.

Score Prediction: 1-1 Sevilla
Some of Villarreal’s recent performances haven’t been that bad and if they can avoid individual mistakes they could get a result here. Without Ocampos, Sevilla may opt to go with Munir, De Jong and Oliver Torres as their front three and in truth that’s much less inspiring than the options Villlarreal have with Santi Cazorla, Gerard Moreno and Samu Chukwueze likely to lead the line for the visitors. The Yellow Submarine could come away from this with a decent point here.
