Espanyol vs Real Betis Preview

Real Betis appear to be finally coming into a bit of form which is an ominous sign for struggling Espanyol heading into this one. Pablo Machin’s side are in woeful domestic form with no real sign of a turnaround in their fortunes since his appointment earlier in the season. Another defeat here would leave them staring down the barrel of a likely relegation to the Segunda Division.

To put things in perspective, Espanyol are the side with La Liga’s worst goalscoring record, worst defensive record and worst home record. It’s therefore no great surprise that they find themselves propping up the division. They head into this having taken just 1 point from their last 6 league games and incredibly just 1 from 8 league matches at the RCDE Stadium this term.

That will be encouraging for Real Betis who are of course coached by Rubi who makes his first return to Espanyol having walked out on the club in the summer. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of reception both he and Borja Iglesias, who did likewise, will get. It will certainly be a sharp contrast to the jubilant scenes on the final day of last season when Espanyol secured European qualification in front of their own fans.

Iglesias in truth has made limited impact for Betis but he is being sorely missed by his old club. Rubi though appears to have turned things around for the Seville side who have won their last 3 matches heading into this one.

The hosts are likely to go with Jonathan Calleri and Wu Lei up top but only one player has scored more than once so far this season in La Liga for Espanyol and that’s midfielder Marc Roca.

Espanyol vs Real Betis Predictions

Score Prediction: 3-1 Betis

Espanyol look poor at both ends of the pitch and there has been no signs that Pablo Machin’s methods are starting to have any real positive impact. With Betis finally playing with a bit more confidence and quality, this could be yet another dark day for the home fans at the RCDE Stadium.
