Athletic Club vs Eibar Preview

This Saturday sees the latest in a long line of Basque derbies this season. Eibar’s ability to cement themselves against all odds in the top flight has made this a regular fixture at this level but there will be some concern in the visiting camp that this could be their last visit to San Mames for some while with José Luis Mendilibar’s side looking in some peril at the bottom end of the division.

Athletic meanwhile will be eyeing up a return to European football in 2020. They were defeated at Betis last time out by Joaquin’s remarkable hat-trick but they had won 4 out of 5 prior to that. Their home record also remains outstanding with an average of 2.38 points per home game this season in La Liga, the third best record in the division. They’ve still only been defeated once at San Mames in the league under Gaizka Garitano.

There’s not much about Eibar right now that suggests they will be a threat to either of those records. They’ve lost their last 4 games and that includes Basque derbies against both Alaves and Real Sociedad. A combination of an ageing side and the lack of impact made by their summer signings leaves them looking as vulnerable as they have done for some time and a real scrap for safety may await them in the new year unless they can turn their current poor form around.

Athletic were missing some key men last weekend in Seville but they are bolstered by the return of Raul Garcia from suspension here. Garitano must decide whether to recall him ahead of Oihan Sancet or keep faith with the youngster and use Garcia as a striker with Inaki Williams playing out wide again. Eibar meanwhile will have to cope without the suspended Pape Diop and Fabian Orellana.

Athletic Club vs Eibar Predictions

Score Prediction: 2-0 Athletic

It’s hard to make much of a case for Eibar getting anything from this game. Only Espanyol have conceded more goals than them this season which makes it hard to see them coming here and grinding out a low-scoring draw like some teams try to. At the other end, they are missing Orellana who has scored 4 (2 more than any other Eibar player) and assisted 4 (also 2 more than any other Eibar player). This could be a relatively comfortable win for Athletic.
