Villarreal vs Atletico Madrid predictions, H2H and match preview for this Friday’s game in La Liga. Read on for analysis and predicted line-ups as two sides in need of a morale boosting win meet.
Villarreal vs Atletico Madrid Preview
The last thing Atletico Madrid really needed at a time like this following a damaging sequence of results, is a trip to the Ceramica to face a bogey team Villarreal. Atleti did win the last meeting between the sides (in Madrid) but they’d gone 7 without a win against the Yellow Submarine prior to that. Their opponents aren’t in much better spirits heading into this one though having slipped down into the bottom half following a poor run of form.
Indeed it’s just 1 point from 5 games for Villarreal which equates to the joint worst return in La Liga over that period. They’ve not even had a particularly tough run of games with Celta Vigo, Eibar and Mallorca all defeating them in recent weeks. Despite that, they have still only lost once at home this season and Javier Calleja will be desperate for some kind of result from this game with Villarreal in danger of slipping as low as 15th this weekend if they get nothing from it.
Atletico Madrid were undone by a piece of Messi magic last weekend but they can at least take some heart from their performance against Barcelona. It was a game they should have got something out of but it’s now just 1 win in 7 for Diego Simeone’s men in all competitions with 3 of the last 5 ending in defeat. They do at least have Joao Felix fit again but they could really do with their big money summer signing to start providing a bit of inspiration.
Simeone has been quite frank in his admission that this is a transitional season and he’s probably got a point when you consider the masses of talent and experience that left the club in the summer. Atleti may not be quite as strong as they once were but there is still more than enough attacking quality in this side to suggest they should have something far better than La Liga’s 14th best goalscoring record.
We aren’t likely to see anything too radical from Simeone here with Morata and Felix likely to lead the line. Meanwhile Villarreal may persist with a 4-1-4-1 approach despite struggling in recent weeks. They should be able to name a stronger eleven than the one that took to the field at the Mestalla last weekend with Santi Cazorla hoping to return in midfield following injury.
Villarreal vs Atletico Madrid Predictions
Score Prediction: 2-1 Villarreal
Villarreal didn’t play badly in defeat at the Mestalla last weekend and could easily have got something from that game. It was a more encouraging performance and while their current form is poor, it is just 1 defeat in 10 league outings at the Ceramica and they’ve only failed to score in 1 of their last 29 matches on home soil. Given Atleti’s struggles and the recent history of this fixture, this feels like it could be another dark day for Los Rojiblancos.
