Leganes vs Barcelona Preview

Perhaps it is testament to the newfound competitiveness of La Liga or at least the ineptitude of Barcelona on the road, that we head into this game which pits the bottom club against the leaders genuinely uncertain what the outcome will be. Leganes upset Barcelona with a famous win here on matchday 6 last season. It was a result that really kick-started their season but their need for another shock victory is even greater this time around.

Leganes sit rooted to the foot of the table although there was a relatively encouraging start for new boss Javier Aguirre prior to the international break. A backs to the wall effort on a rainy night in Donostia, saw Lega fight hard for a 1-1 draw, secured by Youssef En-Nesyri’s equaliser. Judging by the way the South Madrid minnows approached that game, Aguirre appears reluctant to tinker too much with the style of play that saw Leganes achieve their highest ever league finish last term. It’s likely to be a back five again here for the visit of the champions.

Barcelona are still top of La Liga after another Messi masterclass defeated Celta Vigo in their most recent game. However their away record this season and even going further back is woeful for a side of their quality. Their 6 away league games so far in 2019/20 have yielded just 7 points with Ernesto Valverde’s men having already slumped to lethargic road defeats at Athletic, Granada and Levante.

A repeat here remains unlikely but there is a growing sense that teams have figured out how to get at this Barcelona side and Valverde has shown little sign of finding a solution. The visitors are hampered by a few defensive selection problems too which may see Moussa Wagué start at right-back with Junior Firpo on the other flank and that’s one area where Leganes may feel they can really attack the defending champions.

Leganes vs Barcelona Predictions

Score Prediction: 2-1 Barcelona

Leganes are better than their return of 6 points from 13 games this season suggests. However they are having one of those campaigns where chances are being missed at key moments and perhaps a touch of sloppiness has crept into their game when there was almost none last season. Barcelona should find a way to win this game but we have said that before this season and the rock bottom hosts certainly look capable of making a real game of this.
