Valencia vs Granada Preview

It has been a contrasting week or two for these two teams. Having outperformed Valencia, despite a vastly inferior budget, Granada have been dealt a couple of reality checks with back-to-back defeats leading into this game as they twice missed the chance to return to the top of La Liga. Valencia meanwhile have bounced back well from some poor performances by claiming two important wins.

Much was made of the fact that they allowed their opponents to have a staggering 55 shots across the away games against Lille and Osasuna last month. A few tactical tweaks do seem to have made a difference with Valencia winning at Espanyol last weekend before a fine Second Half comeback secured a 4-1 win over Lille in the Champions League to boost their hopes of progress in that competition. However the jury is certainly still out on recent appointment Albert Celades.

His opposite number Diego Martinez is making a real name for himself meanwhile as the youngest coach in La Liga. He has emphasised the importance of the team over individual talent and his Granada side has certainly epitomised that ethos so far. This will be a test of character though with defeats against Getafe and Real Sociedad having just halted the momentum they’d built up.

Valencia have a fair bit of depth to their squad and may rotate a bit here following their Champions League exploits. The wide roles are certainly up for grabs but Dani Parejo continues to run the show from midfield and time and time again he has helped Los Che out of a hole this season. Granada will need to find a way to limit his influence if they are going to get anything out of this one.

Valencia vs Granada Predictions

Score Prediction: 3-1 Valencia

Something seemed to click for Valencia in the 2nd Half against Lille and they will approach this game with much more confidence as a result of that late flurry of goals against the French side. While it may be unfair to say that Granada’s bubble has burst, they were always going to find it hard to maintain their blistering start to the season and in a tough away game like this, it’s hard to see them getting a result.
