Barcelona vs Celta Vigo Preview

Barcelona’s season stooped to a new low in midweek as they failed to score at home to Slavia Prague in the Champions to pile more pressure on Ernesto Valverde. Many Barcelona fans would like to see the board do what Celta did last weekend and change their coach. Oscar Garcia has replaced Fran Escriba in Galicia but his first game is something of a baptism of fire, away to the club he played for during the 1990’s.

Barça’s midweek problems came immediately on the back of a 2nd Half collapse at Levante in La Liga as they succumbed to a 3-1 defeat. Despite the problems that continue to rear their head, Barcelona are still top of La Liga heading into this weekend and their home league record this term is as outstanding as ever. They’ve won all of their five league games at Camp Nou, firing in 21 goals in the process.

That’s not exactly a good sign for struggling Celta whose coaching switch was if anything overdue. Fran Escriba leaves with the club in the relegation zone and with only 9 points from 12 games so far this term. Despite being born in Catalonia and spending his entire playing career in Spain, this is actually Garcia’s first coaching assignment in La Liga and anything from this match would clearly be a bonus.

Luis Suarez is still sidelined for Barcelona so it’s likely to be Antoine Griezmann playing through the middle with Ansu Fati likely to get the nod on the left flank. The Messi-Griezmann relationship is clearly a work in progress but this is still a really tough task for a Celta side that hasn’t won any of their last 17 away league games.

Barcelona vs Celta Vigo Predictions

Score Prediction: 4-1 Barcelona

It may take Oscar Garcia more than one week to fix Celta Vigo’s problems and you sense he’ll probably be content to just get this game out the way and spend some time on the training ground with his players over the international break. Barcelona have had a poor week but with home advantage and Messi on the pitch, they should have far too much quality for the Galicians.
