Were this game being played at the Wanda, you’d sense there would only be one result but Alaves remain a tough nut to crack in front of their own fans in Vitoria. 10 of their 11 points this season have come at home and that’s really just building on what they’ve produced over the last eighteen months when they managed to turn their home stadium into a real fortress under Abelardo.
For Atletico Madrid, this is the kind of game they need to find a way to win if they are going to be serious title challengers. They’ve already been held to a 0-0 draw away to Real Valladolid and this will be a similar kind of game you sense against a team that will happily defend deep and make it difficult for them. Saturday’s 2-0 home win over an equally defensive Athletic Club side should stand them in good stead at least.
Diego Simeone may consider some rotation here in the middle of a busy stint in the season. He opted to start with Angel Correa in attack at the weekend but Diego Costa may be in line for a recall here. Alaves aren’t likely to tinker too much with the formula that has delivered results at home this term but they will need a big improvement on their showing in a heavy defeat at Villarreal on Friday night.
