Alaves vs Celta Vigo Preview

This clash kicks off the Sunday action in La Liga. It’s a day that will see several of the sides near the bottom in action and two of them face off here in what is something of a pressure game for both coaches. Celta Vigo are a point better off currently but it’s certainly Fran Escriba who is in more immediate danger of losing his job with precious few signs that Celta are on course for a much improved season despite some exciting summer additions.

On the surface, Asier Garitano seems a good fit for Alaves but results have deserted him of late. Alaves have lost 4 of their last 5 league games to slide down the table. However it is these home games against bottom half sides where they are usually so consistent and the bulk of their points this term have come from home wins over Levante and Mallorca.

Celta Vigo claimed a much needed three points last time out. Iago Aspas broke his duck for the season to seal a 1-0 win over Athletic Club. It was a victory that might just have kept Escriba in his job but they still remain very much in the wrong half of the league, a disappointing start when you consider 5 of their opening 8 games were at Balaidos.

Both teams are likely to line up 4-4-2 for this one but it’s a conservative 4-4-2 in truth with not much creativity coming from central areas on either side. Alaves and Celta are the two teams to have had the fewest number of shots so far this season in La Liga and it’s hard to see this one developing into a classic.

Alaves vs Celta Vigo Predictions

Score Prediction: 1-0 Alaves

A low-scoring game looks on the cards and the recent H2H backs that up. Neither side looks like they have many goals in them right now with returns of 5 goals from 8 games so far for both. Home advantage could be telling though and this is the kind of game where Alaves regularly manage to grind out a narrow win at Mendizorrotza.
