Mallorca vs Atletico Madrid Preview
Last season’s runners up face an away trip to relegation favourites Mallorca this Wednesday. Atleti have never beaten Mallorca in La Liga under Diego Simeone in three attempts but this is the first clash between the sides in over six years. After a bright start to the season, both sides have had a bit of a reality check over the past fortnight and will be hoping to bounce back here.
Mallorca have played quite well in the majority of their games but finishing has been a problem for them. Having failed to score in three straight matches, they did find the net twice at Getafe at the weekend but it was their defence that let them down as the Balearic islanders sank to a 4-2 defeat. A couple of goals for striker Ante Budimir will at least do his confidence the world of good moving forward and they will need the Croatian to continue on the goal trail in this one.
As for Atletico Madrid, Diego Simeone will be content with the way his side has performed so far this season but results have deserted them since the international break. They were held to a goalless draw by Celta Vigo at the Wanda Metropolitano at the weekend and head into the midweek action in 6th place whereas they would have topped the standings had they found a winner in that game.
Atleti may shuffle their pack a bit here with this game coming in the middle of a busy stint in the season. Joao Felix may get a rest with one eye on the Madrid derby this weekend, particularly given Alvaro Morata and Diego Costa are both available. Mario Hermoso and Marcos Llorente are also pushing for starts following their summer moves. Mallorca meanwhile look likely to hand Real Madrid loanee Kubo a start in midfield given veteran Salva Sevilla picked up a knock at the weekend.
Mallorca vs Atletico Madrid Predictions
Score Prediction: 2-0 Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid will be hungry to get back to winning ways to give themselves a lift heading into the derby on Saturday. They have sufficient depth in their squad to rotate without significantly weakening the team and some fresh legs could just be decisive here. Mallorca have shown enough to suggest they will be competitive this season but they may just be overpowered by Atleti here and the visitors ought to leave with all the points.
