This match pitches two of last season’s surprise packages up against each other. While Alaves ultimately faded to finish in mid-table, Getafe took their fight for Champions League football to the final day. They have European football to look forward to after the international break but they’ll be eager to put some more league points on the board before then.

They’ve only taken a point from their opening two games although they’ve had a tough start to the campaign with matches against Atletico Madrid and Athletic Club. They are boosted by the return of Jorge Molina from suspension here at least. He will bring a bit more physical presence to their attack this week and even at the age of 37, Molina remains an integral part of the team with his partnership with Jaime Mata so key to Getafe’s recent success.

Alaves have had a busy summer of comings and goings but some may question the wisdom of their decision to let Guillermo Maripán leave for €18 million to join Monaco this week. It’s a large fee for the Chilean but Alaves don’t have much time to reinvest and it was notable at the back end of last season, that they looked far more vulnerable defensively when he was absent.

In the short-term, the return to fitness of Victor Laguardia is at least timely for Alaves and he should slot in at centre-back here. They’ll be desperate to improve on their last two showings on this ground where they conceded 4 goals on each occasion but Asier Garitano will be encouraged by his team’s ability to keep it tight so far this term with back-to-back clean sheets helping bring 4 points.

Score Prediction: 2-0 Getafe

Alaves had two relatively kind home fixtures to start the season and they’ll be content with their return of 4 points. However this will be a much sterner test and with Maripan no longer at Alaves and Molina back for Getafe, this feels like a good opportunity for Jose Bordalas’ side to pick up their first win of the campaign in a fixture they dominated back in January.
